South End landmark district standards and criteria

As referenced in the site description and opportunities page of this website, the competition site is located within the South End Landmark District. It should be noted that while the Landmark Commission sets out clear guidelines as to desirable materials, colors, and lighting standards for Public Areas, the larger goals of the Commission are to "insure that new construction has a positive effect on the historic physical character of the Landmark District." For new construction, "The focus of the standards and criteria is on the compatibility of new construction with the existing character of the South End without dictating style or taste." The Commission will be invited to review proposals at all stages of the competition in order to assist the BCA and the community in defining the appropriate character for this exceptional public space.

Designs submitted for the Ideas Phase I are expected to provoke and excite members of the design jury, community participants, and the general public. Adherence to Landmark District Standards and Criteria is strongly encouraged but may be broadly interpreted.

A printable version of the Standards and Criteria is available here.
