The plaza will serve as an agent of regeneration and rebirth for the BCA
year after year. Artists will be selected to redesign the plaza each year
using the
existing paving tiles. Every five years, the entire plaza will be recommissioned,
leaving the existing tiles to be sold in an auction as artifacts, stones for
the garden, and works of art.
+EVENT {01} regeneration /the surface is a system of removable 1ft x 2ft tiles.
Each year, an artist will rearrange the tiles into a new surface for the BCA.
Artists will be working and reworking the same canvas year after year with
the same tiles. Each year, when the new design is unveiled, the people of
Boston will come to see the new design.
+EVENT {02} rebirth /every five years, a new set of tiles will be recommissioned
and an entire new surface will be constructed. This will be a major event,
with a new set of tiles that will offer new opportunities for future artists.
The existing tiles will be auctioned to the community to raise funds while
the plaza surface make its way out into the city and the world, bit by bit.
