Strips of brick move along pathways, rise to form benches at the perimeter
of the plaza, and fade into translucent mesh structural arches, framing views
of the BCA complex and creating a distinct visual identity. The strips are
organized along direct circulation paths. The green spaces have been extended
and their fences removed – as if they have toppled their manicured borders.
The terraced planters remain, sliced through with circulation paths. Displaced
bricks are salvaged for use in building benches and perimeter framework.
The cupola is moved from its current location to sit under the two major trees
on the site. New interactive learning stations are integrated into the cupola,
forming an educational children’s playhouse. The leased ATM moves to
a sleek new home integrated into one of the structural arches, next to a small
cafe. In harsh weather, a tensile structure is erected over the plaza, defining
usable space outdoors. Simple changes intervene in the Artist’s Courtyard,
maintaining its engaging character and encouraging use. Plantings soften the
space and a ramp leads to the shed roof, providing gathering area.
In order to visualize interior activity on the exterior, sound sensors inside
the building affect solar powered LED lights embedded in the mesh arch structure.
The lights change color and pulse in response to the intensity of events inside,
stimulating curiosity. Monitors embedded within the arch supports display
live views of internal spaces intercut with images of work by BCA artists
and performers, and notices about upcoming events.
