Events Unfold
Taking the cue from the Calderwood Pavilion and the sidewalks surrounding
Atelier the folding planes become the unifying language of the design. At
the three main entry corners of the site the plaza peels up in gentle folds
– with the top forming the base for the BCA signage and creating a dynamic
landscape in the otherwise sterile plaza. At the BCA plaza two of the lifting
planes form stepped seating for visitors to rest or view a performance. Its
geometry embraces and plaza to shield it from the vehicular traffic and at
the same time reveals the entrance to the exhibition spaces below. The exhibition
space also serves as a secondary access to the Artists Courtyard and studios
(backstage).
The Artists Courtyard has an existing shed that is now enclosed with folding
planes that creates a continuous flow of the ground and allows the roof top
to be utilized as a stage.
Again using the Calderwood Pavilion as a guide a perforated aluminum screen
now flanks the other side of the Cyclorama building. It aligns with the ground
floor datum line of the pavilion and matches its material thus creating a
balance on either side of the Cyclorama façade creating a focal point
on the Cyclorama. The screen could be used as projection screen at night and
hides the unsightly balconies and fire stairs.
At night the lights that spread out from under the folding planes become beacons
that draw the visitors to the area.
