Inside :: Out references position – the Cyclorama originally constructed for a singular view(ing)point to comprehend the whole work, this proposal introduces multiple spaces to express diverse views of the whole community. The Street Stoop, Light Box and White Box create opportunities for interchangeable positions between performer and viewer.

Street Stoop
Expands on the South End’s stoop culture and the inherent theater of the street – setting the stage(s) for BCA’s programming to extend outside, becoming integral to the community’s identity and rituals. Carefully positioned stages address the BCA and its neighborhood to construct a multivalent site for planned and spontaneous performance.

Light Box
Embodies multiple viewpoints – replacing the kiosk with a pavilion that transforms, responding to the community’s creative energies by accommodating a variety of configurations throughout the day and year. Possibly self-sustaining with a youth-run co-op arts café/newsstand/gallery, it provides multifunctional arts spaces for BCA-programmed youth arts education.

Sidewalk Projection
Opens up critical views – moving the curb out and eliminating on-street parking produces unobstructed views to the plaza and BCA buildings. The reclaimed territory accommodates temporary structures for open markets and festivals.

BCA Apertures
Reveal inside to outside – cutting openings into BCA facades exposes interior activities. Strategic placement of freestanding apertures creates cohesive awareness of the BCA arts block.

White Box
Creates common ground for artists and the public– extending art production into the courtyard, colleagues and the community participate in the work. The hovering platform and stairs create an adaptable space transforming into exterior gallery, theater, and/or studio space.
