The Boston Center for the Arts serves the community as a cultural resource
and as a node of entry to the historic settlement. As generators of our proposal
we looked at the building’s role as the southern gate to both the city
and the wilderness of the New World. Although no longer functioning as a gatehouse
the building stands as a reminder of what Boston once was and what it strives
to be.
Along with a historical impetus our design also displays a tribute to now.
We are no longer a nation of individuals without fear of industrial warfare
on our own soil. Our freedom is now symbolized by the construction of the
Skyscraper. John Hancock stamped his grandiosity on the declaration of independence
and his legacy is a symbol of American democracy. Having the option to pay
tribute to Boston’s John Hancock Tower we seized the
opportunity.
Our tower takes its reference from the complex geometry that it takes to
build a modern Skyscraper, as well as the simplicity of line and form of the
Hancock tower.
Our tower can be used as a meditation space for an actor memorizing lines
for his big break, or an artist painting in the twilight shadows. It is also
a modernization of the age-old symbol of the playbill. Instead of tacking
signs to a billboard the artists wishing to advertise their next public display
can project onto the tower that stands as a 21st century symbol of entry to
a timeless structure.
