Concept
The circle and light form the basis of our design. The Cyclorama’s inside
form is embraced as a unifying element for the entire block and light beckons.
Circles evoke themes of inclusion, harmony and regeneration; they bring people
together. Light illuminates ideas, truth, color, thought.
Context
Embedded rings of light demarcate the arts block and convey the message this
is a special and creative place. The light rings carry the message outward
like ripples in water. Reverberating, like a heartbeat, they draw people inward.
The creative destination message streams along Tremont in a colonnade of trees
and glowing light. Columns of light with digital signage tell you where you
are and where you are going. You are in the creative heart of the South End.
Function
Our design fosters comfort and engagement. Flexible seating accommodates all
everywhere. All lighting is solar powered. Plantings improve air quality and
provide shade. Filled with urban sounds and conversation, the plaza is a place
to meet, be seen and sit; with a book, with a performance, with a friend.
The BCA brand is codified as creative, adaptable and neighborly.
Artistic Expression
Artist interventions are innumerable. All light devices can be digitally programmed
(color, images, etc). Entrepreneurially, the furniture might be designed in
collaboration with a manufacturer and licensed for reproduction (e.g. the
BCA Chair). The artist courtyard is designed as a comfortable place for gathering
as well as an informal exhibition space.
