Submission 0100
To resolve problem of visual congestion in BCA Plaza.
To allow multi use in Plaza and Artists’ Courtyard.
To restore Cyclorama as visual BCA centerpiece.
To address need for strong focal artistic elements as visual anchors to BCA
block.
PROPOSAL WILL…..
Place kiosk where it will “mass” with existing trees on site,
affording “clean sweep” of area in front of Cyclorama. Kiosk and
trees create a Victorian parklike note at Clarendon end of plaza. 22’
of contemporary ironwork may be created in front of building opposite “park”
benches.
Place Great Tongs in Artists’ Courtyard and/ or in front of Calderwood
Pavillion. These sculptures have a small base, are from 40’ to 60’
high. Concept of placing a tower sculpture in a confined space is new and
exciting. The Whitney Museum is presently supporting construction of a tower
sculpture by de Suvero in its courtyard. If two Tongs are created these would
be diverse in form and color. Tower could also be designed as abstraction.
Afford choice of a sculpture with broader base at Berkeley Street end of block.
One such work might be Plaza, constructed of box girders some 30’ high.
Columns are placed asymmetrically on grid.
New paving pattern of BCA plaza will pick up and enhance Schwartz aesthetic,
therefore bringing additional visual unity to entire site. The new lines are
constructed using Cyclorama radii. Pavers in arc arrangement, drawn from rotunda
center, establish the presence of the dome. Outside radius of new garden retaining
wall and benches is same as rotunda radius.
